What is a Sinus Lift Procedure?

A sinus lift procedure is sometimes required before a dental implant procedure can take place. A dental implant is a titanium rod that is implanted into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. The implant is then used as a support for a permanent false tooth.

Because every tooth in the mouth plays an important role in how we eat, chew, and speak, it is important to fix gaps as soon as possible. Having missing teeth can make you look older and lead to a higher risk of developing gum (periodontal) disease. Dental implants are the best way to permanently replace a missing tooth because titanium naturally welds to the bone tissue.

One factor determining whether or not a dental implant procedure will be successful is the amount of bone tissue the patient has. If the patient’s bone density is not enough to firmly hold the implant in place, then a sinus lift procedure might need to be performed. During a sinus lift, the surgeon will make a small incision to expose the bone. Then the bone will be lifted to raise the sinus floor.

A bone graft is done to add more tissue to the bone. It is a relatively pain-free procedure as anesthesia is used throughout the surgery. While the recovery is not painful, it can take a long time. There is usually between four and twelve months between the sinus lift and the dental implant procedure to give the bone enough time to heal.
