What Is A Dental Crown And Why Are They Recommended?

Sep 20, 2021

Dental crowns are custom-made tooth-shaped dental restorations used to restore, cover, and replace damaged, deeply decayed or broken/cracked teeth. They are made to either cover the damaged tooth fully or partially, depending on the type of dental crown you get from your dentist.  Dental crowns are beneficial in restoring the integrity of your dental structure. They can also prevent reinfection and cavities after root canal treatment while protecting the integrity and strength of the tooth.

How Are Dental Crowns Placed?

To get a dental crown, you would generally require two dental appointments. You can visit a dentist near you or one of the very qualified dentists at Greenlake Dental for your dental crown placements. On the first appointment, the dentist would conduct a dental checkup on your teeth, thereby allowing the dentist to examine your teeth and analyze the level of damage. By doing that, the dentist would be able to recommend a dental crown that suits you best. Also, the dentist will check the teeth to confirm if there is a severe tooth decay that has extended into the tooth’s nerve. If the tooth’s nerve is already infected, the dentist would suggest doing root canal treatment before placing a dental crown.

After your teeth are examined, the dental assistant will take an impression of the existing tooth and match the shade; then, the dentist will prepare your tooth for the dental crowns. Before the dentist proceeds, they will administer local anesthesia to the affected area to prevent you from feeling discomfort during the procedure. Furthermore, the dentist would prepare the tooth by removing any and all decay and or cracks. Sometimes, due to the extent of decay or cracks, the dentist will have to add material to the tooth in order to give the new crown sturdy support. The dentist will reshape the structure of the remaining tooth to give room for the crown to fit.  After the tooth is reshaped, the dentist would then take another impression of your dental structure to send to the lab, where your dental crowns would be made to fit your dental design especially. However, it takes over two weeks for the dental crowns to be delivered to the dentist’s office. This is why the dentist would make temporary dental crowns that you can use before the permanent dental crown is completed. During your second appointment, the dentist would take out the temporary dental crown and place the permanent one after making sure that it fits perfectly with your adjacent teeth and that your bite is correct.

Types of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns vary in type. The types of dental crowns include:

  1. Metal Dental Crowns: These types of dental crowns can either be gold or silver. They are the most popular and most robust type of dental crown. They are made up of strong metals that can tolerate every force caused by teeth activities (biting, chewing). Unlike other, non-metal dental crowns, metal crowns are very sturdy and can last longer if maintained properly. However, it has been criticized for its prominent appearance and non-esthetic feature. You can visit the dentist’s office near you for your metal dental crowns.
  2. All-Porcelain Dental Crowns: They are also known as all-ceramic dental crowns. They look like natural teeth, thereby matching the color of surrounding teeth after it has been placed. Porcelain crowns are virtually impossible for others to notice that you have a dental crown. They are also good alternatives for people who are allergic to metal. However, they are not as strong as metal dental crowns and are not recommended for people who grind their teeth habitually.
  3. Porcelain-Fused-To-Metal (PFM) Dental Crowns: Unlike regular porcelain crowns. PFM is made up of porcelain and metal materials. The metal is placed underneath the porcelain material. They are solid due to the metal underneath. Since they are made up of porcelain materials on the surface, they are suitable for cosmetic purposes. However, the metal might begin to show its appearance once the porcelain material starts to wear down.

There are many reasons that your dentist will recommend dental crowns. Always discuss all options of dental crowns with your doctor before making a decision. They will help guide you towards the restoration that is best for your overall health.   Click to listen highlighted text! What Is A Dental Crown And Why Are They Recommended?
